Yellow Dung Fly

Scathophaga stercoraria

The Yellow Dung Fly, a very common fly most often associated with cow dung, as anyone walking through a pasture in summer will no doubt be familiar with. However they can be found pretty much anywhere and feed on the faeces of many animals, including dogs. The males are yellow and gather around cow pats in massive numbers, often waiting for females but also, being mainly carnivorous, feeding on smaller insects.

The females are a sort of blue/grey colour, but otherwise rather similar looking to the males.

Yellow Dung Fly Female

Males and females turn up regularly in the Garden, the adults will feed on pollen as well as other insects, although we have not witnessed this ourselves. The visiting male below, just seemed to be relaxing and buzzed off as soon as I got a few seconds of video.
