Eurygaster testudinaria
Date First Recorded in the Garden: 28/04/2025

This particular shield bug belongs to the family Scutelleridae within the order of true bugs (the Hemiptera). From a distance we thought it was a Sloe Bug but there was something a little different about it, so we managed to get it into a glass tube to take a better look at it.
Firstly, as usual, to confirm that this little fella was returned safely to the Garden where we found it. Note around 18 seconds into the video you can make out that the antenna are yellow except the final two segments which are black. A feature of this species. The depression in the centre of the head generally tells this apart from any similar species.
The larvae feed on grasses but we’ve not recorded these in the Garden yet.
