Family Entomobryidae: The Slender Springtails
A good size family of springtails with approximately 1700 species worldwide and a good number are found in Great Britain. They tend to be large springtails, and are the prey for many other invertebrates, such as ground beetles and crab spiders.
Orchesella cincta
The yellow’ish stripe on the abdomen confirms this species and helps make them stand out when observing them in their habitat. A very common species found within leaf litter, compost and on trees.
In the Garden
Our first record was noted on the stone steps amongst the leaf litter and soil that accumulated in the corner of the steps, literally hundreds of these guys amongst other springtail species and invertebrates such as woodlice.
