Family Apionidae: Seed Weevils

There are about 90 species in the UK, which can be difficult to distinguish to species level. The Apionidae are now considered as a sub-family of the Brentidae and its members are all believed to be plant feeding (phytophagus). They are also generally oligophagus, which basically means the species of this family are typically restricted to a narrow range of plants, often to a single family or a few species within a single family.

Lesser Clover Seed Weevil – Protapion trifolii

A very difficult species to be sure of and this can at best be marked as a possible identification. As the name suggests a species that feeds upon clover, which is not present in our garden is around in good amounts locally.
