There’s not much more to report for January 2024 that hasn’t already been recorded in the blog. There is the one outstanding issue from our blog post on the 2nd January regarding a possible new species of moss in the Garden. The species in question is below, and immediately we could see it was not like the other mosses recorded in the Garden.

There was only one tiny clump of this species growing on wet soil amongst the wildflowers and grass. We have left it alone in the hope that it continues to establish. Once there is a larger colony we hope to take a sample and have a closer look under magnification. For now we have just recorded it as a most likely species down to genus level.
We can confirm that at least one frog has found it’d way to the new pond, the presence of which will slow things up further as we don’t want to harm any amphibians.
