This shade tolerant plant is known locally as either Herb Bennet or Wood Avens, although it it has lots of other local names. It’s rather common in the area, especially along the woodland edges.

It’s five petalled flowers make an attractive site in the garden, but its the fruits and the burrs they contain that steal the show for us. Of course you need to take the time to admire them in the first place. They are very small.

The species can become a bit aggressive if not kept in check. Indeed in 2023 it seems to be having a bumper year. For now though we will keep a close eye on it and knock it back a little as is needed.
