Common Chrysalis Snail

Lauria cylindracea

Date First Recorded in the Garden: 21/12/2023

Lauria cylindracea – 21st December 2023

Family Lauriidae: A family of land snails

There are, as of around 2020, 3 species of Lauriidae found in the British Isles. Two of which are from the Genus Lauria.

Lauria cylindracea – Common Chrysalis Snail

A very common species, although we genuinely haven’t spotted it in the Garden before. It is tiny (around 4mm) but if it has been a regularly occuring species, we would be surprised not to have noticed it before.

In the Garden

The original 21st December 2023 find was of the shell only. It was located on Nostoc in amongst mosses on the stone steps. Identification was again made using the excellent Field Studies Council Snail Guide*. A combination of shape, small size, a thickened white lip and a single tooth as shown in the images below confirms this species.

Around 3.5mm
Thickened white lip and single tooth
