The Animal Kingdom

Phylum: Annelida

The segmented worms. In gardens this includes the earth worms and on one occasion for us, a leech.

Phylum: Arthropoda

The animals with exoskeletons, paired jointed limbs (of varying number) and a segmented body. In gardens this includes insects, spiders and their allies, crustaceans and other less obvious creatures. There are by far more Arthropods than any other type of animal and this is clearly reflected in our garden.

Phylum: Chordata

The animals that at some stage in their life cycles have a notochord (which in some animals develops into the spine). In gardens this includes the birds, mammals, amphibians and for us on one occasion a reptile.

Phylum: Mollusca

The slugs and snails.
