A Harvestman – Opilio canestrinii

This species, which we believe is Opilio canestrinii, is a new comer to these shores. First being recorded in 1999. The individual photographed below was the only harvestman we spotted in the garden during the whole of 2021, which was a bit of a surprise. Hoping 2022 to see more individuals and better still species.

Not being spiders, harvestmen belong to a totally different order within the class Arachnida. They don’t spin silk / produce webs and their body structure is totally different, with the head and abdomen effectively one unit (no waist).
